AirMD’s network of consultants provides Formaldehyde Testing in Fresno, California.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that is found in many common materials and products that are in our homes and offices. It is a colorless, flammable chemical that often emits a strong odor. It is commonly found in building materials and furniture including: pressed-wood products such as particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard which make cabinets, vanities and other furniture; glues and adhesives used in carpets and wood floors; permanent-press fabrics; paper product coatings; and certain insulation materials.
Formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Wood floors are common in many Hillard homes and offices. Whether you installed them yourself, hired a contractor or they came with your property, you probably never gave it a second thought whether the wood floors could make you sick.
A CBS 60 Minutes segment that recently aired exposed wood floors manufactured in China and sold by Lumber Liquidators, which has 360 stores in the United States, to have high amounts of formaldehyde. The source supposedly is originating from the glues used in the wood production.
Here’s an excerpt from the 60 Minutes episode:
Lumber Liquidators linked to health and safety violations
“Lumber Liquidators is a U.S. company, but much of its laminate flooring is made in China, and as we discovered during our investigation, may fail to meet health and safety standards, because it contains high levels of formaldehyde, a known cancer causing chemical. Lumber Liquidators insists its Chinese-made laminate flooring is safe, but it doesn’t appear that way based on what we learned from our own reporting and from the work of people like Denny Larson.”
While the segment was focused on Lumber Liquidators, problems may exist with other importers as well. We’ve seen this previously with Chinese drywall and lead based paint in toys to name a few. The fact is this: Consumers must take matters into their own hands by taking the necessary steps to protect themselves from the dangers associated with products imported because government regulation is unable to do so.
If you are concerned about formaldehyde, the best way to protect the health of all occupants is to have your home or office tested by an AirMD network consultant.
